Live Oak Cemetery

Oak View Cemetery

In the outskirts of eastern Monrovia (also known as Duarte) lies a large tranquil cemetery. I have always wanted to drive through the grounds, and finally did so today. It was very peaceful and cool in the shade. I practically had the place to myself, and enjoyed a contemplative moment before returning to my errands.

Stairs in the Forest

Jill's Cabin

I love this photo. Found it on mike_1630's Flickr photostream. I'm not sure of the exact location of the stairs, but they are in one of canyons local to Monrovia.

Wine and Cheese

cheese and crackers and wine

I have to say that there is nothing I am looking forward to more right now than the opening of "California Wine and Cheese" on Foothill and Stedman in Monrovia. From the looks of things, it's not going to be your run-of-the-mill wine shop. They are taking their time with gorgeous wood counters, polished concrete floors and a smattering of tables and chairs by the window.

I could just should with glee if if turns out they allow dogs. A fireplace would be grand, as would original artwork on the walls. Of course, this last bit is wishful thinking, but one can dream! :) Oh, and yes, please, please, please can they be open and serving past 10 p.m.? Ah, to have a bit of Europe in small-town Monrovia!

Right now they are putting the finishing touches on the place, and I have left more than one anticipatory nose print on the glass! I will report back here as soon as they are open. I promise!

Shear Magic

Shear Magic

Monrovia seems to have a PLETHORA of hair salons, with no shortage in sight. A new one is opening up on Foothill and it's called "Lock Starz." You'd think that with all the hair salons that EVERYONE would have fabulous hair, but things seem pretty normal here in Mayberry. Here's a glam sunset shot of Shear Magic. I'm rather fond of the old wooden letters in the sign. :)

Monrovia Deer

Monrovia Deer

The local wildlife includes some critters not quite as dangerous as the coyotes, bobcats, and bears. This shot was captured while taking a quiet afternoon drive around the upper edge of town over the weekend. Click through the photo, then click the "map" link for the approximate location.

As the photo's caption says: "Count the deer. Check again."

It is pretty clear that the local deer really aren't at all worried about people or cars. These gals hardly even twitched when I rolled to a stop and lowered the window. This grassy hillside is perfect fodder for them, and I am sure that the homeowners on the street really prefer them in the grass to their flower beds.

Hot Rod Show

Grrr

Life wouldn't be complete without fake legs coming out of a car grill. This weekend Monrovia was host to a hot rod show. Some people get REALLLLY into it! This fun photo taken by Ross Berteig. To see more images from the show, click on the photo.

Music at Twilight

Music at Twilight

Nice shot of local musicians playing on Myrtle Ave. in Old Town Monrovia. They come out on the weekend nights and add to the atmosphere. Last night I heard an impromptu group singing "Summertime" in front of the Monrovia Coffee Co. after it had closed. So village, I love it!
