Here's a funny fellow I saw on the hiking trail today. Shaped like an ant, but he's quite large with a furry red coat of sorts. He was scurrying like mad to get away from me!
I found one of these in my drive way in Sierra Madre this morning. I did a google image search for "large red ant" and found this picture. I have three pictures myself two of which include a quarter to scale the insect. Email me in your interested and I'll forward you the pictures. Good to know what it was, I thought I had discovered a new species of ant! :)

Yes, it's a velvet ant, which isn't really an ant, but a species of wingless wasp. They can sting, so be careful.
